Campaigns for NUP candidates in Moroto District have stalled just a month after nominations, with candidates citing a lack of funds as the main obstacle to reaching voters effectively.
George Francis Ojamuge, the NUP flag bearer for the Moroto Municipality parliamentary seat, told journalists that financial pressures have brought his campaign to a standstill.
“My pockets are now very dry. Each time I approach the electorate, they keep asking for money. Elections in Uganda have become highly monetized, and many people want money before they can support a candidate,” Ojamuge said.
Ojamuge outlined his vision for Moroto Municipality, which includes transforming the town into a modern city capable of creating employment opportunities for youth and improving infrastructure.
He warned, however, that the dream may collapse without financial backing.
He revealed that while NUP leadership has expressed willingness to support candidates, the freezing of the party’s bank accounts has hampered these efforts.
“With the accounts frozen, there is nothing the party can do for now,” Ojamuge noted.
The struggling candidates are now appealing to well-wishers and supporters to step in, warning that without immediate assistance, NUP’s presence in Moroto races could weaken before polling even begins.
